Chaos || Pain || Despair
Sometimes things happen fast, and sometimes things take a bit longer than expected. When State:Chaos released their first four track attack ‘Ashes Of Misery’ upon the world in April 2007 the reactions by the press were good and a lot of people thought that it wouldn’t take long for this band to come up with a first full length album. But this turned out to be not correct. I don’t know (yet) what has happened exactly in the State:Chaos camp, but in the end we had to wait for four years until ‘Chaos || Pain || Despair’ was finally ready.
The big question now is if the album was worth waiting for all these years. And the answer to this question is two faced. On one side it must be clear that State:Chaos did not create the most greatest and everything destroying thrash masterpiece of this year. But we didn’t expect this at all and so this doesn’t matter at all. What we did expect was an album that would continue where ‘Ashes Of Misery’ stopped. And these guys from the South of The Netherlands managed to do this. ‘Chaos || Pain || Despair’ became a strong and professional album. The songs are well written and although every now and then the band still uses a bit too standard riffs or breaks this doesn’t spoil the fun. State:Chaos plays their music with force. They play it tight and they know how to keep their mixture of thrash and death metal interesting by adding every now and then a fast drum part (‘Hybrid Breed’ and ‘To Die Again’), by not forgetting to play some solo’s to (‘Destroy The Selfmade King’) and by exchanging cool mid tempo riffs with firmness as in ‘Never Again’. The vocals have a variety from grunting to screaming and if these two different sounds are indeed created by singer Mischa only, who also plays the guitar, then this dude must be totally insane. I only have a small complain about the production. If the drums would have gotten a more full sound the whole album would have sounded even more powerful. Bit this is only a small item and it doesn’t interfere with the overall feeling of the album. I think that the Dutch metal scene can be glad about a release like this forty minutes clocking ‘Chaos || Pain || Despair’. Check it out!
